Case Study #1 is a teacher case we were assigned to look at and help plan out some strategies to help the teacher grow and learn from the problems she was facing. I looked at the background information that I was provided and then put together some Classroom Community Suggestions, some of my Non-Negotiable and SOPs, I created a shared Vision and the Affinity Process, some logical Punishments/Consequences, Developmentally Appropriate practices, and how to use Teacher language to help benefit both the students and the teacher. I also answered some discussion questions that helped me think deeper about Sally’s case and what could go better in her classroom. Considering this, we were assigned to look at Standard #5 Innovation Applications of Content. Sally has struggled with classroom management and connecting with her students. She says she doesn’t know much about her students. With this being said, the standard descriptor states: “The teacher understands how to connect concepts and use differing perspectives to engage learning in critical/creative thinking, and collaborative problem solving related to authentic local and global issues. In the case study background information, it also says that she has a very diverse group of students, therefore Sally really needs to work on getting to know her students better and work on classroom management to meet her overall goal. This standard has helped me think about how a teacher should connect with their students and learn about connecting concepts and using different perspectives to engage learners.
By completing this case study I believe it will play a large role in helping me improve my future teaching. With that being said I was able to look through an almost “judgment” lens and see what Sally was doing wrong in her classroom, and was able to give suggestions on what she could do better to improve her classroom community and relationship with her students. For example, one suggestion I had for how she struggles with issues related to classroom information, was that she could start by creating a classroom SOP chart WITH her students so they know and understand what behaviors belong and do not belong in the classroom. With this being said, I can use this chart I created to help me when I become a teacher and when I start my classroom teaching.
