For this artifact, the assignment was to create a timeline from different developments: Oral Language Development, Reading Development, and Second-Language Development. I decided to go with oral language development as I’m also learning how children learn to speak in another one of my classes. I find oral language development very interesting and this development starts very early on in life. For the assignment, I looked at an article that showed the different developmental stages and placed that information into stage categories on a timeline. When learning about the different developmental stages it is interesting to see how much progress a child can make from birth to 5 months and then from 18-23 months. For this artifact, I would align it to the Maine Common Core Teaching Standards, Standard #1: Learner Development. “The teacher understands how students learn and develop, recognizing that patterns of learning and development vary individually within and across the cognitive, linguistic, social, emotional, and physical areas, and designs and implements developmentally appropriate and challenging learning experiences.”
Moving forward, I believe that this assignment will help me in the future. It has deepened my understanding of oral development and the growth of speaking skills in children. With this knowledge, I can integrate it into my various education courses, enhancing my overall understanding. As mentioned earlier, this assignment will help me in education and even in the real world as I now know what stages children should be at and understand how children learn and develop. This assignment has helped expand my pedagogical knowledge and has helped improve my future practice as I become an effective educator
